Roguelite potato action-adventure

Brotato: Premium is a paid action game from Erabit Studios. As the mobile port of the 2D top-down shooter for PC, this brings the same unique art style and the same gameplay premise. As a potato brother left behind enemy lines, you must survive the hostile environment while waiting for support to arrive. With hundreds of possible builds, every run is unique and will definitely leave players trying out more combinations.

In terms of gameplay, Brotato: Premium plays a lot like Vampire Survivors or Survivor.io. You only need to control the titular potato, although you can fire it manually.

Help the lone potato survive

An interesting aspect of Brotato: Premium is its premise. A ship from the distant planet Tubercula crashes into a different, alien environment. Brotato is the only one who survives. With his ability to handle up to six weapons, the lone potato-looking creature must hold his own while waiting for reinforcements to arrive. The titular character, however, is largely customizable and can be played with different character archetypes.

It uses a simple visual design, similar to those found in The Binding of Isaac. Unlike other endless roguelites, however, it offers an organized format where waves go after your character for a set time period. You need to defeat as many enemies as you can and survive until the timer goes out to get to the next level. As mentioned, there are hundreds of weapons and items for unique builds

As a roguelite game, though, your weapons do not carry over to the next run. For a title with such a lot of gameplay possibilities, the challenge is limited to the early stages. As your Brotato scales in strength, it’s easy to leave the enemies behind. This makes the late game quite boring. This, however, is partly checked by the game’s random generation, which affects enemy and item spawn rates.

A fun and casual game

If you’re looking for a quick action game with no long-term commitment required, Brotato: Premium is a good title to start with. It is easy to learn and it has a lot of gameplay possibilities to explore and check, although this part is partially dependent on luck. With intuitive gameplay and simple yet enjoyable graphics, the only thing missing here is difficulty scaling that keeps up with your progress.

PROS

  • Has hundreds of weapons and items
  • Features time limits per level
  • Allows character customization
  • Good use of minimalistic graphics

CONS

  • Weapons and builds do not carry over
  • Lagging late-game difficulty scaling
